Phenoxyethanol - An Ingredient of growing concern globally
Phenoxyethanol is an organic compound classified as a glycol ether and a phenol ether. It is widely used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products because it has germicidal properties.
According to the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (under the European Medicine Agency), Phenoxyethanol is safe for all consumers - including children of all ages - when used as a preservative in cosmetic products at a maximum concentration of 1% [1]. However, it should be avoided in baby care products considering the skin permeability and sensitive nature.
Across the globe, health authorities such as the FDA (USA), The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA, Japan) [2], and many others have limited the usage of Phenoxyethanol up to 1 percent concentration.
However, considering the lack of pediatric skin-centric data and the fact that pediatric skin is thin, sensitive, and more permeable, it is a growing agreement among the scientific community to avoid this ingredient in baby care products.
While it may still be allowed to be used in limited quantity, the concern about the ingredient in itself is a good enough reason for Chicco to offer a completely Phenoxyethanol-Free range for today's new-age consumers.
Chicco in India is one of the first brands to make baby skincare products phenoxyethanol-free, making it one of the safest products available for babies in this segment
